OK, here goes. Win 7 Home Premium, Dell XPS 8300, 16 GB RAM, Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical (USB). Every time, EVERY TIME, I restart the computer, the mouse works fine, no exceptions. Sometime later --- could be minutes, could be hours --- the mouse will simply die/freeze/quit without warning. The light on the mouse stays on, however. Most of the time. Nothing I can do will get it back, but when I restart, problem is gone. EVERY TIME. Then, the whole thing starts over again. Could be 2 minutes, could be 20, could be 2 hours. Bang. Mouse no longer responds.
Yes, I've tried plugging the mouse into another USB port --- same problem. So I start thinking "Aha! Must be the USB controller!" Am I getting warm?
Yes, I've tried using the mouse on a different computer --- it works fine, no problems. So I think "Must not be the mouse."
Yes, other USB devices plugged into this machine, like the keyboard, continue to work just fine. They don't stop working. "Hmmm . . . . maybe it isn't the USB controller."
Yes, plugging a different mouse into this computer shows exactly the same problem. "That pretty much rules out a defective mouse, doesn't it? Both mice work fine on other computers, both stop at some point when plugged into this computer."
Yes, I've updated the BIOS with recommended files from the manufacturer's web site.
No yellow triangles show up in Device Manager. I'm stumped, and so is my otherwise very capable go-to computer guy. He wants to reinstall Windows, which I'd like to avoid unless it's absolutely necessary.
Any ideas? Please??
